The Society is a statutory body constituted under the Legal Profession Act (NT), which controls and regulates the affairs of the legal profession in the NT and offers services to lawyers. The Society is the only body in the NT that is able to issue Practising Certificates to lawyers.
For the community, the Society investigates complaints made against lawyers and has also produced information relating to legal costs.
The Society cannot provide any legal advice, however a list of firms who have identified that they specialise in particular areas of law can be found here.
Additionally, the Society coordinates a First Interview Scheme service which enables members of the public to have an initial 30-minute consultation with a legal practitioner for $99 (including GST).
Members of the public can also search for an NT legal practitioner or firm here.
The Society is staffed by a small Secretariat and business affairs are managed by an elected Council which receives input from a number of specialised committees.
